Whilst China continues to denounce the Trump administration of supporting Taiwan illegally as they see the Taiwanese President as a separatist trying to formalise independence from China. In other words China is not going to sit quiety as this is taking place before their eyes.
Against this backdrop Taiwan is negotiating the purchase of $180 million worth of advanced torpedoes and missiles openly with the US. Congress was advised of a possible sale to Taiwan of land based Boeing made Harpoon anti ship missiles.
Taiwan aims to bolster its defence capabilities irrespective of any souring relations between them, China and the USA. Taiwan seeks to deal with the rising threat from China and is mobilising any resources towards any such act of aggression committed against them.
The situation is delicate. As officially no Country has ties with Taiwan as even though it is a democratically ruled Island China continues to claim that Taiwan as an integral part of Chinese territory. This situation has resulted in difficult relations with China given that the United States is bound by its own laws to provide any democratic nation the means to defend itself.
If the USA and Taiwan come to an agreement about the purchase then it should be delivered in 2023. The Island has a well trained military force with mainly US purchased hardware. The Chinese have continued to show provocation by holding military exercises in the air space and waters close to Taiwan. The Island is no match for the military might of China and sits precariously exposed.
