India has over 266,000 confirmed cases of Covid-19. The situation has become dire with authorities unable to cope.
Mumbai now has more cases that Wuhan at its height of the epidemic there. Indian health experts are warning that Delhi is also experiencing increased cases. They estimate more than 500,000 Indians will contract the virus. So far they have recorded over 7,700 deaths, however daily infection rate has hit 10,000 cases a day.
India had to lift the lockdown as many people were struggling, in an economy with over 1.3 billion people many having to live hand to mouth, hence if they don’t work they don’t eat. The lockdown was used to get preparations in place for a large number of cases, however currently the hospitals are overwhelmed to the point of turning away people with covid like symptoms as there simply aren’t facilities to cover so many people at once.
This has in turn angered the population who blame the Government for a total lack of care for the people. Sentiment is running high and Prime Minister Modi seen as a hero by many in the Country is beginning to see criticism of his handling of the situation in the Country. Many likening him to Trump in his handling of the Virus and many are openly calling the government a fascist one.
It seems the norm around the world where large numbers are infected and many have lost their lives. In a Country like India with such a large population, poor infrastructure and insufficient medical facilities it is not hard for the people to voice their dissent.
