President Trump has confirmed that he has been taking the non-FDA approved drug Hydroxychloroquine as a preventative measure against contracting Covid-19. The reason he says he takes it is because he believes many front line workers are taking it, and he has received “a lot of positive calls” about the drug.
The drug has been found not to have any effect on pre or post contact with the Coronavirus. It is generally a treatment for Malaria and has been found to alleviate mild cases of Lupus. It helps with joint swelling and rash flare-ups in Lupus patients.
On its own Hydroxychloroquine is a drug taken by people for many years. The FDA has cautioned however that case reports have documented heart-related problems, particularly arrhythmias, in patients taking hydroxychloroquine or chloroquine alone or combined with azithromycin or other QT-prolonging medications.
They have gone further to announce Hydroxychloroquine and chloroquine have not been shown to be safe and effective for treating or preventing COVID-19. They are being studied in clinical trials for COVID-19, and we authorized their temporary use during the COVID-19 pandemic for treatment of the virus in hospitalized patients when clinical trials are not available, or participation is not feasible, through an Emergency Use Authorization (EUA). The medicines being used under the hyroxychloroquine/chloroquine EUA are supplied from the Strategic National Stockpile, the national repository of critical medical supplies to be used during public health emergencies. This safety communication reminds physicians and the public of risk information set out in the hydroxychloroquine and chloroquine healthcare provider fact sheets that were required by the EUA.
It is assumed that the President of the United States of America is receiving possibly the best medical advice for himself and other important members of the White House. This his admission to taking an unapproved drug for Covid-19 is baffling at best.
As the number of people contracting the virus exceeds 1.5 million people in the US with the number of deaths exceeding 91,000 this is yet another eye-opener about the leadership’s handling of this deadly virus. Prior there have been other suggestions by the President such as potential rays killing the virus internally within the human body, or the injection of bleach as it kills the virus in 24 hours.
It is getting harder by the day for the people around the President to contain his public expressions without ridicule in one way or another.
However it must be asserted that the President is 73 years old and if he has received this type of medical advice that goes against the recommendations of the FDA then he is perfectly entitled to go ahead and take the medications he believes is beneficial to him.
Caution though must be highlighted as the drug he has claimed he is taking should not influence others to do the same. Hydroxychloroquine is definitely not a drug you should take without the strict supervision and advice from your Doctor.
