Dariga Nazarbayeva, a 56-year-old daughter of Kazakhstan’s former president, has been stripped of her duties by the current leader.
The decision was announced on May 2nd. According to the order from President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, Nazarbayeva will no longer be a speaker of the Kazakhstan Senate.
It was not immediately clear if this was her own wish. Nazarbayeva was offered a seat in the senate by Tokayev himself back in March 2019. In the spring of 2020 she declared she would not be running for president despite the rumors.
Dagira Nazarbayeva’s father, Nursultan Nazarbayev, was the first president of Kazakhstan. He used to run the country since its 1991 independence until unexpectedly resigning in March 2019, the same day his daughter got the place in the senate.
